How Do Diversity and Inclusion in the Workplace Make the Organization Better?
Diversity in the workplace brings harmony among employees, bolstering the company’s reputation, hastening decision-making, and promoting comparative advantage.
Company culture is more about how a company does its work rather than the work itself. According to BambooHR, culture is the shared set of beliefs, values, attitudes, standards, purposes, and behaviors within the company.
Poor company cultures typically result from ineffective leadership, but that’s not always the case. According to Dom Nicastro, writer for CMS Wire, “The first big problem is that most organizational leaders are ‘completely unaware or have no way to identify the quality of the culture in their workplace,’” according to research by LearnLoft he reviewed. Nicastro then goes on to describe six ways leaders can ruin company culture including: withholding information, lack of diversity, avoiding conflict, not focusing on achievements, abdicating responsibility, and being too eager for change. In my 30+ years of work experience, culture has always been a key component in my employment decisions, whether it be a full-time position or working as a contractor. There’s nothing worse than having to spend hours each day working in an environment I don’t enjoy or with people who make me miserable. Those types of environments are mentally draining and causes a lot of undue stress that I am no longer willing to put up with.
If you were a fly on the wall at your company, what kind of culture would you notice as you watched the faces of your team, the tone of their voices, and how they reacted when different leaders (including you) walked into the room?
