Detecting Integrity in Others

Detecting Integrity in Others

The best way to detect lack of integrity in others

Integrity is one of my most important core values. So much so that I refuse to make even a small promise if I am not 100% sure I can keep it based on everything over which I have control. And when things spin out of my control, I still do my best to find innovative solutions to maintain that promise if I can.

Lack of integrity in others is a huge red flag for me. When I see a pattern of someone acting in a way that completely contradicts their words, I make a mental note to avoid relying on them or taking anything they say at face value.  In my opinion, you disqualify yourself as a true leader if you have an integrity problem.

Lerae Quy, in an article on Ladders.com about integrity, says, “Integrity is a word that we hear almost every day but we seldom take the time to think about it. Integrity is similar to ethics, honesty, and trustworthiness—they are a moral code of values that affect our behavior. Integrity is about doing the right thing in every situation, whether it’s convenient or not.”

The rest of the article provides six ways you can detect lack of integrity in others followed by a tip for each one for how to NOT be that kind of person. The one area I detect a lot is “They Do The Right Thing – When They Have An Audience.”  Leaders like that have a chameleon personality. Behind closed doors and when no one is watching their worst traits ooze out like a toxic sewer, and yet the moment a spotlight shines their way, they have a canny ability of effortless switching gears to become exactly what the audience wants and approves of.
