I’ve got three teenagers whose response to why they haven’t done certain things is “because I don’t feel like it.” This could be anything, from getting up in the morning, to eating breakfast to cleaning their rooms, to going outside, etc., etc., etc.. (notice – three etceteras!) My goal, while often realizing I could have more impact on a brick wall, is to remind them that it isn’t about what they FEEL like doing: certain things just must be done!
Having an extraordinary business and being an extraordinary leader isn’t about doing what you FEEL like doing, it is about identifying what needs to be done and doing it! Whatever needs to be done, whenever it needs to be done.
The ongoing challenge I get from business leaders is that there’s never enough time. Recognize that there will always be work to do, and something that must be done. It is like a horizon – every time you think you’ve just about reached it, the horizon has moved that much further away.
The solution is to manage your work and manage your time. Define what the priorities are for each day, leave enough time for chaos (unknown or unplanned events), choose the level and types of events you must (vs.. are willing to) manage and finish things when you must finish them.
The key, of course, is to know your limits and when to ask for help. Think about it like this: if you were a locomotive, you could identify a specific amount of weight you could pull. There are maximums you can pull for a short distance and a sustainable amount that you can pull nearly infinitely. What would happen if you pulled the maximum for too long? What would happen if you exceeded the maximum?
With your work, you cannot work 20 hour days 7 days a week and expect to be able to sustain it. You could, however, work 8-10 hours per day, five or six days per week. If you managed your time effectively and got the most out of your work time, you would get the maximum amount of work done in the minimum amount of time. You could focus on what MUST be done.
Getting done what must be done is the point. Being extraordinary still takes work, but managing your time will give you less opportunity and excuse to write things off as “I don’t feel like it!”
