New Hire Success – Effective On-boarding Tips You Should Practice

New hire success is one of the greatest desires of any entrepreneur. This is because the process of onboarding a new employee can be daunting, especially for small and mid-sized businesses. The time, energy and financial resources companies spend in the process of recruiting and integrating new hires can be enormous, and any mistake made along the way may be counterproductive for business growth and sustainability.

Of course, studies have shown that businesses invest an average of 21% of an employee’s annual salary to complete a replacement process. A wrong recruit does not only consume time and energy, it can cause untold damages to valuable business equipment as well as established organizational culture and structure. In fact, a bad hire can cripple a hitherto vibrant business if the necessary precautions are not taken in the process of recruiting and engaging new hires. Thus, it is imperative that hiring managers learn four valuable tips that can guarantee new hire success:

1) Show Genuine Understanding for New Hire Challenges

New hires, whatever their level of experience or expertise, are often faced with a myriad of challenges in a new work environment. They obviously lack the basic understanding of how things work. This can make them vulnerable. According to Michael Watkins of the Harvard Business Review, human resource managers must understand and address both the internal and external factors that could interfere with new hire performance and productivity.

2) Assign a Year-Long Mentor to New Hires

The chaotic nature of most modern workplaces often does not give room for new hires to easily acclimatize to the new environment. Hence, John O’Connor of the Forbes Coaches Council recommends that hiring managers should assign a year-long mentor to new hires to help them get accustomed to the new tasks. He stresses that the mentor doesn’t have to be the immediate supervisor, but someone skilled enough to care, counsel and help new hire adjust properly and completely to the different aspects of the company’s business deals.

3) Ensure Everything Is Fully Set Up Prior to Their Arrival

If you want your new hire to hit the ground running, then you must ensure you get everything they would need to function on their new role in ready mode prior to their arrival. This will put the new employee on the right track as soon as they get started.

4) Maintain an Open-door Policy

The easiest way to make an employee feel welcomed in a new workplace is for the managers to engage new hires in open communications. According to Carol Vernon, a career coach with Association Now, successful onboarding includes ongoing conversations with old and new staff members with the aim of resolving work challenges. If new hires know that their questions and needs will be quickly addressed, they will feel relaxed and give their best.

The first impression a new hire has of your company will go a long way to determine his/her effectiveness on the job. By incorporating these tips in your recruitment process, your organization will be laying a solid foundation for new hire success. Proper implementation of these tips will smooth the path for new hires toward achieving the organization’s shared goals.
