Business Growth Strategies

Plan for Business Growth | Extraordinary Business

Business Growth planning
When your business grows quickly, things don’t “naturally fall into place” like you might hope or think.  Many businesses actually go out of business as a result of growing too fast and not having the infrastructure to support it.  The way to avoid some (and I do mean some) of the surprises that go along with business growth is to have modeling and a process that will help you see and address some of the obstacles.

Untapped Resources | Extraordinary Business

New York Times reports that mergers are making a comeback

imageIn an article posted by the New York Times on February 15, 2013, the “Mega-Merger” is back, meaning that companies are joining forces (rather than one purchasing another) in order to do some sort of specific deal.  Examples they include are Warren Buffet and Brazilian investors purchase of Heinz for $23 billion and the merger between American Airlines and US Airways valued at $11 billion.

Mind-boggling numbers, I know. However the concept isn’t far fetched.  In the case of the American Airlines and US Airways deal, consider the potential; they will now be the largest airline in the world (big kudos!), the airlines, combined, have a larger customer base, greater reach around the world, they can potentially combine what they have learned in the marketplace and technologies to give them strategic advantage over other airlines, the people, the knowledge and the physical assets.  Of course, a merger like this doesn’t come without hiccups or potential issues: as with any business, failure rates can be quite high, but for those that are successful, it can be a bright new day.

Elevate Your Game | Extraordinary Business

Elevate Your Game Have you ever been to a store or worked with a business owner or a business that seemed to have a “think-small” or “scarcity” mentality.  What I mean by that is that there are certain business owners who spend so much energy simply trying to survive that they never get anywhere.  It is as though they have a boat with a hole in the bottom and instead of investing in repairing the hole, they focus all of their energies on bailing water out of the boat.  What they often miss out on is the fact that even if they don’t immediately have the resources to repair the hole, completely, if they are the only one bailing, there is no one sailing the ship.

Follow the Postman | Extraordinary Business

“Neither snow nor rain nor heat nor gloom of night stays these couriers from the swift completion of
their appointed rounds” – “Motto” of the Postal ServiceFollow the Postman

As a young person, we had a mail man named Mr. Brown.  In our neighborhood, the mail carriers (still do) park their vehicles at the end of our street and carry the mail from house to house in their mail sack.  I remember that no matter what – rain, snow, wind, Mr. Brown was always there with our mail.

Dream Team

Extraordinary Business: Building The Dream Team

Looking at professional sports teams, many times people remark about how talented players are and how much they are paid. What is not always considered is the work that goes into it – not just the practice, but also the recruitment, training and integration to work together as a team.image

As a business leader, building a strong team needs to be an ongoing activity in your organization. You’ll want to put time and energy into building your dream team. Here are five things you need to do so:

1. Understanding of your vision or goals for your company. If you manage to recruit people for your team who cannot share a vision with you, they will typically a) lose interest or b) create their own.  The danger with this is that your organization can quickly become unfurled as loss of clarity drives the business in several directions at once.

2. Know exactly what you are looking for. Not just a job description or a facial profile; you want the whole nine yards, so to speak. Hiring someone with “potential” may not be feasible for your company. Define what your company needs now…once you’ve gotten those positions filled, then consider potential.

3. Take your time. Like dating or marriage, if you rush into it, you may discovered that in your haste, you’ve made a poor or short-sighted decision. Also, like dating, always be looking.  If you narrow your prospects, you may miss out on opportunities.  Casting a wide net will give you opportunity to see many prospects.

4. Create a framework with expectations for a position then a specific job description. Remember, while you have aspirations and expectations for the position, the person you are hiring has aspirations and expectations of their own. If you position yourself so that the relations is based on seeking out the best for all parties, the benefits will far outweigh the commitment.

5. Plan to work for your team. Make sure that they have everything they need in order to perform their best. image Remember, they are an extension of you and representative of your business with everything they do.  While it seems counter-intuitive, consider how much more productive people are when they have everything they need to do their job.  Don’t make excuses.  Just do it.

6.  Realize that you do not need to be the best on your team at everything.  You need to lead your team.  Gathering people around you have excellent, complimentary skills, who can share your vision, can help get your company further that you could potentially do open your own.

7.  Do not micro-manage your team.  You are looking for people to fit specific roles in your company.  They should be experts at those roles, not people that will take away your your productivity.  Yes, you and or your team, should put significant energy into getting this person or these people acclimated with the way your company does things.  At the same time, your new employee should be able to stand on their own after a short time.

8.  Do not under compensate.  Understand what you can afford to invest, what the expected return is and know what your timeframe for reaching that goal is.  If you need to, be creative with compensation, but do not have your new team member feel under-compensated.  Many business leaders that make this error end up losing valuable employees as a result.

Understanding what goes into putting a team together is essential for your business growth.  While many business leaders do not wish the “headache” of dealing with employees, this is typically the only way to grow the company.

Be Extraordinary.  Build a Dream Team.

Moving Forward | Extraordinary Business

When I was running one of my first businesses, as a young man, I remember sitting with a mentor who told me, “always go plusher.”  What he was referring to, at the time, was my car.  Now, I would not be one who would be considered a materialistic person, but the thought resonated with me, and carried on to everything that I do.
Think about this: humankind has always strived to improve its condition.  A horse-drawn carriage was not good enough.  A steam engine locomotive wasn’t good enough.  Flying across the country wasn’t good enough.  We have always sought to better ourselves.  Countless men and women wake up every day, seeking to do better for themselves, their communities and their counties.  This is more than a lifestyle; it is a way of life.Move forward
As business leaders, growing a business, thinking about how to tap into the idea of improving someone’s condition needs to be the way of life.  To continue to improve our own condition, we need to focus on the needs of those that we serve.  Napolean Hill, personal success author, once said, “It is literally true that you can succeed best and quickest by helping others to succeed.”
Think about that for a moment: what if you took the focus of your business away from how YOU could succeed to how OTHERS could succeed.  This doesn’t mean that you cease charging people for what you do, or you undermine your own success, but rather, find new, better, innovative ways for your target customers and clients to achieve some need that they have in a way that is meaningful to them at a level of access that is appropriate for them.
Access means that you can serve your clients and customers in a way that is appealing to them – not cutting corners.  It means that the pricing you are offering that target market is appropriate for the market.  It means, above all, that your tactics are not predatory.  It means that customer expectations are being met and exceeded – every time.  It means that you are psychic in meeting their needs and helping them achieve the goals that you have sole capability of fulfilling.  It means in the middle of the night, they are email or calling you to help them get through a situation.  It means that this is no longer just business.  You are advancing lives.

Don’t Just Stand There! Open the Door! | Extraordinary Business

I was working with a client, over the weekend, at his office in Downtown Atlanta.  He mentioned to me, when we were walking in, that he had gotten a ticket parking in the same location that I did.  However, there was a 2 hr parking sign there, so I felt like I was safe.

As I was returning to the car, after the meeting, I noticed a Parking Nanny  (patrol officer assigned to writing parking tickets) standing at the corner of my street with two other guys.  They were talking about writing parking tickets and were debating on whether or not to have my truck towed.  As they continued their conversation, I walked down to the truck, got in and drove off.  As I drove by them, I saw them staring at me with their eyes bugged and their jaws on the floor.  They had missed an opportunity.

This is what happens with many business leaders and super villains.  They spend so much time evaluating and discussing their opportunity that them miss out altogether.  This is why it is so important to have a plan in place to evaluate and take advantage of opportunities, quickly.  This is why you’ve got to be of the mindset that you are always looking for opportunities.

For example:

  • Business mission and vision statements – How will this opportunity effect my company beliefs?
  • Job Descriptions – I’ve met someone who I think might be a good employee – I just don’t know what I am looking for or how to leverage their capabilities
  • Business modeling – We need to get more space and more vehicles.  Based on our current P&L;, how much can we afford?
  • Idea Champions – We have great ideas – but they just remain ideas.

All of these are typical scenarios and responses are tools that you, as a business leader, need to use in order to take advantage of some opportunities.  Of course, this is the short list.  Yours will be a bit longer, and practical for your line of business.

When opportunity knocks, be ready to be extraordinary.  Don’t just stand there.  Open the door!
