How’s Your Plan? | Extraordinary Business

How planning can and will impact the success of your companysmall business planning

Apple bought Beats by Dre…AT&T bought Dish Network…Facebook is after WhatsApp.  Which question is more important – the what, as in what did they buy or the why?

Well, more than likely, these were part of their plan to perhaps gain more market share, expand their capabilities or offerings, purchase some new technology or knowledge or some other strategic initiative to increase shareholder value. In the case of these businesses, they have their board of directors and stockholders that are holding them accountable for achieving or exceeding the company’s strategic goals. No acquisition is done in a corner or without some type of planning.

As small business owners, while we aren’t beholding to our stockholders, at least to the extent of larger companies, we should have some type of accountability to ensure that we are creating and following through with the strategic initiatives that the company requires. This could be – should be  – people who would be willing to have a stake in the success of your business and will be committed to making sure you don’t drop the ball.

When the Unthinkable Happens …| Extraordinary Business

How to ensure your business can continue when the unthinkable happens…

Horrified!I was working on something on my laptop the other day. I had a glass of water sitting next to me, along with my mobile phone and my tablet. I also have a beautiful Labrador Retriever who is rarely not by my side.
I am sure you have heard enough laptop-dog-water horror stories to know where this is going; in case you haven’t, the dog begged to go outside; when he realized that I understood and was getting up to take him out, he rushed by the coffee table, wagging his tail triumphantly and in doing so, knocked my glass of water squarely on to my laptop!
After explaining to the dog the error of his ways, I learned quickly that the laptop did not enjoy the bath at all; I quickly shut it down and turned it on its side to empty out what seemed like a gallon of water onto a towel I had nearby and grabbed my tablet and phone. It has a sealed battery, so it remained with the device.
So what do you do?

Getting There| Extraordinary Business

Taking an Operations Management approach to build your company and avoid substandard performance.

imageIt is amazing watching the athletes perform in the 2014 winter Olympics. These amazing athletes from all over the world do things that most people could never do. You may think, in the back of your mind, that these people must put in a great deal of training in order to develop their craft.
Despite their amazing capabilities, even those that fail to medal have skills far beyond the average athlete; they are the best in the world. Through natural ability, training, great nutrition and health, they’ve earned an opportunity and the right to compete.
If an athlete just focuses on skating or skiing, but doesn’t develop the mental ability to press through, they probably won’t be as successful as one who puts more emphasis on overcoming the mental challenges.
One who eats right is probably going to be more successful than one who periodically cheats on their diet.
One who is committed to increasing strength, agility and speed will probably be more successful than one who is simply a great athlete.
You see, there isn’t a one dimensional way of making it to the top. It is a combination of training activities, diet, mental and physical strength and skill that elevates and athlete to the elite status.

Hit the Ground…Running! Extraordinary Business

Operations-PlanningPlanning, visioneering, ideating, SWOT analysis, business performance overview…great stuff, but where’ the activity?

Have you ever gone through the process of doing some extensive work on how you will grow your business, then found that six months later, not much has changed? Have you ever found that despite doing the work, you still tend to veer off in other directions, constantly in the state of developing new products and offerings? Do you find that the offerings you are developing tend to exist in a place of requiring more time than you have available, or are in a constant state of “nearly complete?”

As business leaders, much of our energy seems to ride on getting to the next plateau. What happens to many of us is that we tend to take in lots and lots of information, then become reactionary – needing to implement or grapple on to the next biggest, shiniest thing that comes along. I mean…you’ve got to stay relevant, right?

But at what cost?
