When Things go Wrong | Extraordinary Business

How to plan for and manage unexpected challenges you face in business

image

You have probably been to a restaurant when it is extremely business, with people waiting out the door, slow service and very busy servers. You’ve probably been stuck in traffic at rush hour or when a big event is coming to town. You may have waited in long lines for a movie or for a ride at an amusement park or some of their place where you probably thought or said to yourself that they probably need more people or could use more space.
While you might understand or be patient if it happens once or twice, you will probably find alternatives – be it alternative locations if they are available, or available times if the issue seems to be a timing issue. In either case, you are thinking about the cost to switch or select a different option. If it is a restaurant, it may be fairly easy to find another restaurant or movie theatre, making the switching cost low. If it is an amusement park or a road, the switching cost might be higher – you may have to travel a great distance (cost) to avoid the lines or to get on open roads.

When the Unthinkable Happens …| Extraordinary Business

How to ensure your business can continue when the unthinkable happens…

Horrified!I was working on something on my laptop the other day. I had a glass of water sitting next to me, along with my mobile phone and my tablet. I also have a beautiful Labrador Retriever who is rarely not by my side.
I am sure you have heard enough laptop-dog-water horror stories to know where this is going; in case you haven’t, the dog begged to go outside; when he realized that I understood and was getting up to take him out, he rushed by the coffee table, wagging his tail triumphantly and in doing so, knocked my glass of water squarely on to my laptop!
After explaining to the dog the error of his ways, I learned quickly that the laptop did not enjoy the bath at all; I quickly shut it down and turned it on its side to empty out what seemed like a gallon of water onto a towel I had nearby and grabbed my tablet and phone. It has a sealed battery, so it remained with the device.
So what do you do?

What Ails You? | Extraordinary Business

You know what needs to be done. You know it is keeping you up at night? What is keeping you from taking the next step?

fearA conversation I have had with numerous business owners centers around their interest in getting their companies beyond their present existence, how they don’t have this or that or some other thing  and that they are working far too many hours. They feel like they are doing “okay” but that they could be doing better if they only had some other thing.

One thing about small business – there will always be one other thing that that is needed – time, people, money, expertise, etc.. What it boils down to, however, is simply the fear of taking the next logical step. What separates those that achieve their goals from those that live in dreamland is often just taking time to tie up your sneakers and make the leap.

No Room for the Faint Hearted | Extraordinary Business

Get moving or get out of the way.  Business leadership is full of risks.

imageWhen I was in middle and high school, I remember a number of students who found ways to make money; such as selling candy and pencils in the hall, doing other people’s homework or giving people rides home in their cars.  There was always a risk of getting caught, which wasn’t without consequences, but this didn’t stop the people who were really committed to having some money.

Risk is still a very real part of business ownership today, and the consequences could be more devastating, in some cases.  Regardless.  Business leaders, if you want to build a strong business, you have got to learn to eat risk for breakfast.  When you started your company, you had only a 30% chance of being successful.  Do what it takes.  Be tough.
