The Googler: Eric Schmidt | Everyone Needs a Coach

Eric Schmidt, CEO of Google, gave an interview to Fortune in which he says, that everyone needs a coach.  In the video, he describes how athletes have coaches and the role of coaches in the lives of the athletes.

CEO Catalyst, Kris Cavanaugh of Shift, Inc., goes on to explain how her clients, many of who are successful business leaders, have become not just effective business leaders, but also, effective people who are able to achieve things in their personal lives that they had previously given up on.

“Similar to how a business is functionally run, its leadership must be in a position to make good decisions and direct the company toward its desired goal. In order for the business to be extraordinary, that leader needs to be at the top of their game, ensuring they can make decisions with confidence; they can drive the company vision without toppling the company values; they can build the support of their stakeholders and focus on building a legacy for their communities. In short, those leaders need to take back control and make it happen.”

An extraordinary business starts with an extraordinary leader.  Be extraordinary.  Find a coach.

Where do you Fit? | Extraordinary Business

Entrepreneur?

Small Business Owner?

High Growth Small Business Owner?

In August 2010 issue of Entrepreneur magazine (p. 14) (http://www.entrepreneur.com/), several business leaders were polled – most considered themselves entrepreneurial, while one considered herself a small business owner.  The common thread seemed to be that most thought that small business owners simply start and stay small, while entrepreneurs take huge risks and either make it big or lose everythingimage.

As a business strategy consulting firm, we are often faced with the question of how to help a client build their business with the ideal outcome that represents their role in their business.  This might be building a business around a great product or service, helping a business leader start or stabilizing an existing business, or developing a scalable, duplicate-able infrastructure for a high growth business.

The challenge for many business leaders is that they don’t know where they fit, and thus, are challenged when it comes to making certain decisions about their businesses.  Decisions for an entrepreneurial firm might be devastating to a typical small business firm…and visa versa.

Consider the following:

  • An entrepreneur often comes up with an on slot of ideas – good or bad – for businesses.  Many deal with “flash in the pan” types of goods or services, though some do take a single concept and grow and expand it for all its worth.  They typically are very good at leadership, but not so good at management – managing the day-to-day activities of a firm.  You might see them as people who are always building something.
  • A small business owner, on the other hand, is someone who tends to have the more stable personality, and will build a business  with the goal of making it possible, supporting their family and being part of the elite community of small business owners.  While they tend to be good or great managers, they often lack the leadership and drive toward a vision to grow a business that could be bigger than what they can physically put their hands on.
  • A high growth small business owner is probably the hybrid between the two: the business leader wants to not only start a business, but he or she wants to create something that makes an impact, ideally, on the way people do things for an unforeseen future.  Their businesses might start off as small, but are aiming to grow their businesses, as one client put it, “As big as it will grow.”

Understanding where a business leader fits directly impacts the way that the business should be designed.  As they say, “You can’t send a duck to eagle school.”  Be Extraordinary.  Know where you fit.

Extraordinary Business: Just Eat It!!

When someone presents a three year old with fresh vegetables, many times, the child will push it around the plate, play with it and perhaps even mash it up.  But more than likely, it won’t make it down the passageway behind the teeth.  Parents, who (typically) understand the nutritional needs of a three year old, have been known to launch into the battle, ultimately telling that three-year-old, “Just Eat It!!”image

Many business leaders take on the same mentality when dealing with their customers and clients.  This could be in customer service, product or service delivery, branding, marketing, networking, etc..  Whatever process is required is created without consideration for the end user, other than having and understanding (or a feeling) that they should buy it, use it, love it, and tell five people.

Obviously, this is not smart business.  As a matter of fact, just the opposite is true.  J. D. Power III, Consumer Reports and other companies have built successful businesses out of helping consumers choose the best product or service for their money.  While many goods and services do fly below their radar, it often takes one bad review to damage a company brand.

Consider this: typical consumers are not screaming three-year-olds – who many parents often give in to.  No matter how much your tell them to “Just Eat It!!” you are fighting a losing battle.

Build an Extraordinary company: Listen to your consumers.

Eat That Elephant!! | Extraordinary Business

How do you eat an elephant?  One bite at a time.

Of course, there are a million other witticisms that are added to the old adage, but the point is still the same.  If you try to take on elephant-sized goals all at once, they will immediately appear unappetizing.  However, if you look at those same elephant-sized goals as a series of smaller goals, you can begin to look at success.

Extraordinary Business: Do the Right Thing

As I was sitting at a traffic light, this morning, someone got out of their car, ran up to mine and secured the gas cap and door on my truck.  Later, I saw someone pull off the road and into the grass to help someone change a tire.  Acts of kindness do not go unnoticed.  As a matter of fact, while people might tell a lot of people about the thing you messed up, they are likely to remember the kind act for a very long time.

As a business leader, your business probably has a lot of opportunities to do the right thing.  That could look like serving the community, developing a mentoring or leadership program, connecting with other local businesses for networking and mastermind groups, etc.  Doing the right thing means that you aren’t doing these things for your benefit, but rather, doing them because they are the right thing to do.

Isn’t it easy to act the way everyone else does, operate your business the way everyone else does and to slip a few things through, so to speak, the way every other business does?  I guarantee you that whatever gains you make as a result will be only temporary.  Keep in mind: money is only a tool.  We work to live, we should be focused on living to work.  Extraordinary leaders have balance in their lives.  They don’t just sit in the parking lot of their lives, watching it happen from afar.  They take the leadership role and make things happen.  Extraordinary leaders run extraordinary businesses.

Be an Extraordinary Leader.  Do the Right Thing.

Who's Afraid of the Big, Bad Wolf?

“Who’s afraid of the big, bad wolf?” Is a line from “The Three Little Pigs” children story. They were referring to the local wolf who was interested in adding the little pigs to his afternoon menu. After some trial and error, they found an appropriate hideout where they were able to hole up until said beastie blew himself away. Apparently, they took the time to get to know their adversary, his strengths and weaknesses and how to avoid becoming the main menu item at his dinner table.clip_image002

Of course, as a business leader, you should have the same information about “ravenous beasts” that are lurking in your marketplace, seeking to maim and devour. You should have some system of taking some time to just scan the marketplace to see what is new out there. Look in your industry, look in industries that serve the same market, look at the marketplace.

Do you know who your target market is? How are they responding to changes in the marketplace? Who are the new entrants? What are the new trends? Are there opportunities that you are missing out on?

There have been too many business leaders who haven’t taken the time to survey their marketplace on a regular basis. As a result, many are out of business. Virtually none of them have become extraordinary. Very few, if any, have gotten their business to a point where it can run itself outside of the watchful eye of its owner. Plainly said, we can do better than that.

So make a commitment to yourself and your business to survey your marketplace, so you don’t need to be afraid of the Big Bad Wolf.

Aepiphanni Business Solutions is a Strategy Consulting Firm dedicated to serving the needs of business leaders and executives. We specialize in helping people get into business, and stay there.  We welcome clients in the personal and professional services industries, including restaurants, catering and event planning.  As always, we welcome your comments, thoughts, questions and suggestions.  If you are seeking a business assessment, or have further questions about creating your strategy or developing your vision, please give me, Rick Meekins, a call at 678-265-3908, or email us at [email protected].
