In the past five years, the number of micro and solo-owned businesses has grown, representing more than 88% of all businesses across the country. At the same time, this overwhelming population seems to be met with obstacles, closed doors and missed opportunities, as though the sole purpose of their existence is to fail. Regardless, small business leaders get up every day and make it happen.
These are the members of the MOSO Nation – the micro owners and solo owners of America. The Underserved Majority.
The MOSO Nation could be the largest population in the country, crossing boundaries of sex, race, religion and ethnicity. Out of every 10 people you know, on average, most of them are small business owners, and many of them are members of the MOSO Nation. Yet the resources available to this group are relatively few, with most resources going to larger organizations. Those in power would suggest that this might be a more efficient way to support the communities. However, based on the number of small business leaders, only 1-2 people out of every ten members of that community can directly benefit from those benefits.
Basically, 20% of the population receives 80% of the available resources.
Regardless of our size, our stories need to be told. We need to inspire and be inspired by each other, in order to create our own successes, because that’s what we do. We don’t wait for opportunities, we create them. We don’t apply for jobs, we make them. If we have to sell, produce, market, mentor, train, etc., we might as well do it for the community that needs us the most: the MOSO Nation.
Monique Wilson has created an organization and a publication that tells the stories of those who are making contributions to their communities – those beacons in the dark – to provide insights, resources, thoughts and ideas to the smallest of small businesses.
