Why Great Employees Leave “Great Cultures” | Extraordinary Business

In December 2017, Indeed.com drew from their database of more than 15 million employer reviews to determine which companies were rated highest for culture.  Nike was rated number one and a grocery chain called HEB in Texas was rated #2.  Following HEB are Disney Parks & Resorts, Boys & Girls Club of America, Starbucks and Apple (a total of fifteen companies were listed).

Extraordinary companies generally desire to have extraordinary cultures.  But how does that actually happen?  Melissa Daimler wrote a very informative article on Harvard Business Review titled “Why Great Employees Leave Great Cultures” to answer that very question.

Daimler states, “I have recognized that there are three elements to a culture: behaviors, systems, and practices, all guided by an overarching set of values. A great culture is what you get when all three of these are aligned, and line up with the organization’s espoused values. When gaps start to appear, that’s when you start to see problems — and see great employees leave.”

Employee turnover is really expensive – both to the company’s bottom line and to time lost as the team scrambles to cover responsibilities and stretch their already heavy workload until a new person is hired.  No one wants that!  Especially when it can be prevented by creating a culture that supports employees wanting to come to work and contributing to the overall success of the organization.

As a business owner, leader or entrepreneur, being successful boils down to three things, great products and services, great leaders, and great employees. It sounds simple, when you’ve got a great product you know it, people tell you how great it is, and it makes you proud. That’s one out of three you know is solid.

But do you have great leaders in your company? Are you a great boss, are your executives great at motivating and decision-making?
