Extraordinary Business: Building The Dream Team

Looking at professional sports teams, many times people remark about how talented players are and how much they are paid. What is not always considered is the work that goes into it – not just the practice, but also the recruitment, training and integration to work together as a team.image
As a business leader, building a strong team needs to be an ongoing activity in your organization. You’ll want to put time and energy into building your dream team. Here are five things you need to do so:
1. Understanding of your vision or goals for your company. If you manage to recruit people for your team who cannot share a vision with you, they will typically a) lose interest or b) create their own.  The danger with this is that your organization can quickly become unfurled as loss of clarity drives the business in several directions at once.
2. Know exactly what you are looking for. Not just a job description or a facial profile; you want the whole nine yards, so to speak. Hiring someone with “potential” may not be feasible for your company. Define what your company needs now…once you’ve gotten those positions filled, then consider potential.
3. Take your time. Like dating or marriage, if you rush into it, you may discovered that in your haste, you’ve made a poor or short-sighted decision. Also, like dating, always be looking.  If you narrow your prospects, you may miss out on opportunities.  Casting a wide net will give you opportunity to see many prospects.
4. Create a framework with expectations for a position then a specific job description. Remember, while you have aspirations and expectations for the position, the person you are hiring has aspirations and expectations of their own. If you position yourself so that the relations is based on seeking out the best for all parties, the benefits will far outweigh the commitment.
5. Plan to work for your team. Make sure that they have everything they need in order to perform their best. image Remember, they are an extension of you and representative of your business with everything they do.  While it seems counter-intuitive, consider how much more productive people are when they have everything they need to do their job.  Don’t make excuses.  Just do it.
6.  Realize that you do not need to be the best on your team at everything.  You need to lead your team.  Gathering people around you have excellent, complimentary skills, who can share your vision, can help get your company further that you could potentially do open your own.
7.  Do not micro-manage your team.  You are looking for people to fit specific roles in your company.  They should be experts at those roles, not people that will take away your your productivity.  Yes, you and or your team, should put significant energy into getting this person or these people acclimated with the way your company does things.  At the same time, your new employee should be able to stand on their own after a short time.
8.  Do not under compensate.  Understand what you can afford to invest, what the expected return is and know what your timeframe for reaching that goal is.  If you need to, be creative with compensation, but do not have your new team member feel under-compensated.  Many business leaders that make this error end up losing valuable employees as a result.
Understanding what goes into putting a team together is essential for your business growth.  While many business leaders do not wish the “headache” of dealing with employees, this is typically the only way to grow the company.
