Four Top Priorities for the New Decade
January is normally a time of new decisions, new commitments, and new goals. This January is not only the new year of 2020, but it is also a new decade. Time flies, and since 2030 will be here before you know it, it’s important to look ahead and outline your leadership priorities to be sure you end the next decade well.
If you are unsure what priorities to set over the next 10 years, you’re in luck. Camille Preston wrote an article in Forbes Magazine titled “Level Up Your Leadership in The 2020s: Your Four Top Priorities For The New Decade.” According to Preston, “There are a lot of things that you could be doing. Investing your energy in some things will yield better results. This 2020 call to action outlines four priorities leaders can’t afford to ignore as they enter the new decade.”
Her first priority – Ensure every employee understands your organization’s purpose – stresses the importance for leaders to make sure all their employees have a clear sense of purpose with their work. In addition, employees also need to understand the organization’s purpose for being in business and how it intersects with their roles.
Expanding development opportunities is the second priority. Preston suggests supplying coaching/training programs for the staff to professionally develop in order to be promoted to higher levels of responsibility and leadership. Delegating some of your responsibilities to the people on your team is another way to grow them.
As companies continue to hire Millennials and GenZers, it will be important for leadership to create a culture of feedback (which is Priority #3). Studies have shown a correlation between employee retention, engagement and feedback. The best way to give feedback, says Preston, is “…in real time and make it relevant and actionable.”
For me, Preston’s 4th Priority was the most interesting: Stop ignoring mental health in the workplace. She used a statistic that took me by surprise: An estimated one in five adults has a mental health disorder. I did some research and found an article from Harvard Medical School that stated many employees having symptoms of depression, bipolar, ADHD and anxiety seem to manifest them differently at work than at home or other settings.
Preston states the importance of leaders destigmatizing mental health issues. One way to do this is by initiating a workplace wellness program. Through that program, leaders can identify those at risk, connect them to treatment, and put support systems in place to reduce and manage their overwhelmed stress levels.
