Leadership Tactics in a Time of Crisis

Effective leadership is rapidly becoming essential as the coronavirus causes unforeseen changes within businesses across the U.S. As ABC News recently reported, more businesses are mandating employees work from home.  Managing a virtual workforce in the best of times takes great leadership skills.  During turbulent times such as these, it’s even more important to direct your staff and run the business well to reduce the chance of negatively affecting the bottom line or your customer base.

For new leaders, these unexpected changes in the way business is normally done will either be an opportunity for them to shine or a recipe for their downfall.  To support new leaders during this difficult season, Entrepreneur magazine posted an article by Angela Kamouris titled “Successful Leadership Tactics in a Time of Crisis”

Kamouris begins by reminding new leaders that the same qualities they used in their pre-management positions will no longer be enough to get by on. They must become comfortable with ambiguity and be willing to try new approaches and behaviors.  Her second piece of advice is to engage the hearts and minds of those around them by actively nurturing relationships.  Being adaptive is also important through leading with transparency and consistency despite the level of disruptive change.

She continues her article with five additional suggestions including:

  • Beware of the slippery slope of overconfidence
  • Shut up more and listen
  • Become the calm within the storm
  • Delve deeper to create awareness of your strengths and growth areas
  • Invest in executive coaching to maximize your potential

It’s hard to know how long the coronavirus pandemic will affect the marketplace. Until then, as long as new leaders focus on communicating well, setting realistic expectations, and being patient with their team as everyone adjusts to the new way of doing business, it’s likely they will succeed in their role.
