Wise Counsel | Extraordinary Business
King Solomon, of the line of the Kinds of Ancient Israel once wrote in his book of Proverbs, “Listen to wise advice; follow it closely, for it will do you good, and you can pass it on to others: Trust in the Lord.” (Proverbs 22:17-19) Now, Solomon was reportedly the richest and wisest man that ever lived with a estimated income of $709 million per year. This estimate seems to be limited, however, to the gold and silver he received, and not the other valuable trade goods he received each year. Nevertheless, Solomon discovered, noted throughout his book of Proverbs in the Bible, that wisdom is the most important thing for someone to seek. Not wealth, not knowledge, not land or fancy chariots or a big army, but wisdom. Yes, wisdom may lead to the other things, but without wisdom, the other things don’t seem to have the life value one might expect. As a business owner, wise counsel might look like a number of things: a board of directors, a consultant or team of consultants, round tables or think-tanks. The important thing to understand is that you, as the business owner, know your business, your product or service. One might suggest that most business leaders are so attached to their businesses – so close to the “menusha” – that their perspectives of reality is somewhat skewed from truth. Case in point, as business owners or entrepreneurs, how much time do you spend speaking with your clients to find out what they want? How much time do you spend with your vendors, learning about new products or services? Your insurance advisor? Your HR advisor? Your board of directors? Other business owners? Many business leaders have never considered the idea of seeking wise counsel, often outside of their spouse or a trusted member of their staff. Surely, they may do research. However, the reality is that businesses don’t exist in a bubble – the marketplace is constantly evolving and changing. This include areas of tax law, employee law, insurance provisions, business regulations, opportunities for financing, the marketplace, buying habits, spending habits, consumer confidence, news, etc. The job of wise counselors is to provide you, the business leader, with insightful information to help you run your business better and as a result, reach whatever point you define as being successful. Solomon certainly had wise counselors, as do many, if not all of the most successful people on the planet. Why? Because they realize that as wise as they are, they don’t know everything. Extending that thought: they only know what they’ve learned…they don’t know what they don’t know. Grow an extraordinary business. Seek wise counsel. Find great people to surround yourself and your business with and take it to heights of success you’ve only envisioned.
