Leveraging Operations & Strategy in Small Business | Extraordinary Business
Operations, Strategy, Innovation and Technology in Small Business I recently had an opportunity to interview with Todd Schnick at the Incubator about how small businesses
In conversation with a very wise gentleman, the other day, he brought up the idea that when something is made, it is created to fill a certain need or perform a specific function. He proceeded to take out a coffee cup and demonstrated how it has a specific job – to contain coffee, to insulate the drinker’s hand from the coffee and the warmth, to be disposable and to be waterproof. These were specifications the designer had for the cup.
Interestingly, of course, the cup can be used for other things. When I was younger, I might roll it into a ball and hit it with a stick or throw it at someone. I might also use it to contain something else, such as pencils, rubber bands or something else. I might even use it to support one leg of a table that is in an uneven area in my house.
While all of these uses are practical and work somewhat effectively for the moment, in none of these cases is the cup being used for what it was designed to do…it is not fulfilling its purpose…it is being underutilized.
In your own organization – and in your life, for that matter, part of being as effective as possible is being able to identify your purpose. Once you can identify your purpose, and begin to function within it, you will find that you are far more productive than you’ve ever been. Working in an environment where everyone is able to bring all of who they are to what they do – because they are living our their purpose – will increase the overall productivity of the entire organization.
That means a job is no longer a job – it becomes fulfillment.
Identify yourself. Identify your purpose. Be yourself!
